Band @ JMT

The JMT band experience consists of two elements: small group pull-out lessons during the school day, and ensemble rehearsals after school. Both lessons and rehearsals are important because they develop crucial, yet different skills: students learn how to play their instrument in lessons, and in full rehearsals, they learn how to play as a band.

Students new to the band program will begin by attending our 3rd grade instrument demonstration in the spring.  At the end of the year, new students will have the opportunity to choose between the following instruments to play:

For those families unsure of the best fit, Mrs. Taylor can help your child find the instrument that is right for them! Students will be notified by Mrs. Taylor of their instrument placement as soon as possible after the registration period.

In Year 2, our musicians perform in both the Winter and Spring concerts and spend much time perfecting their instrument's tone.
Our more experienced musicians will start the year with lessons and full band rehearsals so they will be ready to play in the Winter Concert. This year is when it gets REALLY fun!

Our sixth graders preparing for their promotion to the Middle School. Sixth graders will have the opportunity to switch to a different instrument, such as the oboe, french horn,  euphonium, or larger versions of their current instrument like bass clarinet and tenor or baritone saxophone. The most successful bands have a full "team" of instruments, so we work hard to create and maintain a balanced instrumentation from the very beginning.  As members of the Gold Band, students will have extra performance opportunities in addition to the Winter and Spring Concerts to better serve our community.
